Target size vs. maximum dimension
Target max size aims the compression at a file-size budget — handy when a form says "under 500 KB". Max dimension caps the longest side of the image in pixels, which is often the bigger win: a 4000-pixel photo scaled to 1920 pixels looks identical on a screen but is a fraction of the size. You can use either or both.
Honest about limits
If an image is already small, we tell you plainly rather than pretending to have helped — there is no point re-compressing something that is already efficient. Compression is also lossy for JPEG and WebP: pushing the size very low trades away visible quality, so pick the gentlest setting that meets your limit.
